About the Job

Phylagen is seeking a Data Scientist with industry experience and deep expertise in microbiome computational analysis. Reporting to the VP of Data Science, you will develop and perform analyses of environmental microbiome data sets for a variety of commercial applications. Working closely with the wet lab and commercial teams, you will take technical ownership of microbiome analysis pipelines, collaborate on study design and execution of customer pilots, and provide strategic leadership in translating research into commercial products.

The microbiome consists of trillions of interacting bacteria, fungi, and pollen collectively present in dust that inhabit every inch of the world. They not only influence our health and well-being, they also provide information about the origin of objects and raw materials.

Phylagen is building a data platform by digitizing the DNA of microbiomes found in places and on objects and creating a unique, identifiable fingerprint. This fingerprint is then applied to a variety of solutions in global supply chains for customers ranging from farmers to retail brands to governments. Phylagen’s mission is to turn dust into data thereby promoting a new level of global supply chain transparency using the environmental microbiome as a data platform.

 

Responsibilities

  • Take technical ownership of microbiome analysis from R&D through commercial launch of microbiome solutions

  • Collaborate cross-functionally with data science, wet lab, and commercial teams to design, analyze, and interpret experiments and customer pilots

  • Perform rigorous analysis of internal and external microbiome data sets; develop robust bioinformatic pipelines to scale analytics for production

  • Present project proposals, results, and interpretation at internal research team meetings and to non-technical stakeholders

 

Minimum Qualifications

  • Ph.D. in bioinformatics, computational biology, statistics or a related field

  • 2+ years industry experience and 5+ years total experience (including graduate and postdoctoral training) in experimental design, analysis, and interpretation of next generation sequencing microbiome data

  • Strong experience programming in Python (preferred) and/or R; proficient with AWS and version control

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills; must be able to communicate complex scientific/bioinformatic concepts to non-technical colleagues and stakeholders

  • Experience collaborating on cross-functional teams to deliver on project goals

  • Strong organizational and record-keeping skills with high attention to detail

  • Experience developing robust, reproducible analyses for microbiome data sets

  • Comfortable with current bioinformatics tools and databases for interpretation of microbiome sequencing data; experience with environmental microbiome data preferred

  • High-quality track record of publications in microbiome research

  • Ability to thrive in a fast-paced work environment

 

Preferred Qualifications

  • Strong data visualization skills with an emphasis on clarity and graphic design

  • Experience with wet lab biology and/or microbiology; appreciation for the challenges and biases these methods bring to NGS data analysis

  • Experience developing software in an Agile/Scrum framework; familiarity with Jira and Confluence tools

  • Experience in machine learning, algorithm development and testing
