How It Works

Phylagen Surface™ is designed for users to swab their built environments. Swabs are then returned to Phylagen for processing and customers receive results on the presence of SARS-CoV-2 within 24 hours of receipt at our lab, via our online portal. 

Phylagen Surface™ is easy-to-use, and sampling can be performed by anyone using our simple instructions. Phylagen’s mobile app is used during sampling to collect additional information about each surface tested. Reported results are assigned to each specific location swabbed.

Phylagen Surface™ detects the presence of both viable and non-viable SARS-CoV-2, so a positive test does not necessarily mean that the virus is infectious. It means that at some point in time, prior to sampling, at least one infected individual was in the building.

Case Study

Auditing cleaning effectiveness and monitoring for the presence of SARS-CoV-2  (and COVID-19 infected workers using Phylagen Surface) in a factory setting 

Phylagen’s customer collected 50 samples from its factory after at least one COVID-19-positive employee had been reported. The customer used our test plan guidelines to determine where and when to conduct the sampling, and samples were taken from high and low touch surfaces, and high and low traffic areas, including a restroom, locker room, and kitchen area.  

Results

Tests revealed that while cleaning protocols were, for the most part, effective, certain locations (e.g. the exit door and locker room bench top) displayed SARS-CoV-2 before, but not after, cleaning - indicating the prior presence of a COVID-19 infected worker and effective recent cleaning.  

Certain other locations, however, in each location (i.e., the restroom, locker room and kitchen) showed virus both before and after cleaning, indicating the need for more thorough cleaning in various places throughout the facility.  

Phylagen Surface™ also revealed that monitoring for early detection of SARS-CoV-2 by regularly testing high risk areas may signal the presence of an infected person in the facility before they would be identified through other means. 

Early detection enables initiation of more thorough individual testing with the aim of reducing the number of employees who become infected with SARS-Cov-2, and consequent employee lost time due to COVID-19 infections and the associated time that facilities will be closed for disinfecting when larger number of employees become infected.
